Open Source in Higher Education

Higher education is the birthplace of open source, and colleges and universities continue to build, maintain, and sustain software the world depends on. From foundational technologies and open standards to research infrastructure, identity and access management, teaching and learning platforms, digital repositories, and emerging technologies, higher education remains a proving ground for open source innovation.

The Open Source in Higher Education co-located event, presented in partnership with the Apereo Foundation, brings that work to SCaLE. We invite developers, maintainers, architects, students, researchers, and technologists to share what you’re building and what you’re learning. From deep technical dives, architecture and infrastructure, to security, interoperability, AI, modernization, and the hard-won lessons of sustaining open source over time. Share what you’re building, exchange ideas with fellow technologists, and help demonstrate the vital role higher education continues to play in open source.

To submit a talk or workshop session proposal, visit the SCaLE Call for Presentations.
