The presentation will take place in Room 209 on Sunday, March 8, 2026 - 11:00 to 12:30

Inkscape stands as the premier open-source tool for vector graphics, but relying solely on point-and-click workflows can become a bottleneck when dealing with repetitive tasks, complex data visualizations, or large-scale file management. This talk demystifies the ecosystem of Inkscape automation. Whether you are streamlining print workflows, generating data-driven art, or preparing files for digital fabrication, learn how to treat your graphics as code to save time and unlock new creative possibilities.

In this session, we will discuss two type of Inkscape automation:

- The Power of the CLI: We will explore Inkscape’s "headless" mode, utilizing command-line arguments and the Action list to perform complex batch operations—such as file conversion, layer manipulation, and canvas resizing—without ever opening a window.

- Scripting with Python & Inkex: Attendees will get a crash course in the inkex library, the backbone of Inkscape extensions. We will walk through the architecture of a standard extension, showing how to programmatically access the SVG DOM to modify paths, generate geometry, and automate tedious design patterns.

By the end of this presentation, developers and designers alike will understand how to build their own tools within Inkscape, turning the software from a mere drawing application into a powerful engine for generative design and automated production workflows.
