User groups can be amazing forums for the exchange of ideas about open source software, but they bring many challenges. How do you get an active, real world community started? How do you encourage members to go from lurkers to engaged members? How do you find new speakers and bring new members into the fold? In this session, we’ll discuss tangible tips and tricks for building engaged meetup groups, drawing upon Meghan’s experience working with the network of 50+ MongoDB User Groups, as well as the local Python and C++ meetup groups in New York City. We’ll talk about cultivating speakers, finding hosts and sponsors, and creative ways to promote your meetup and encourage diversity. We’ll also time for attendees to share their experiences at user groups to make this an interactive session!
