Speaking Topic: OSSIE: Directory Services and Education

Charles began his consulting career working with Andersen Consulting and is now a partner at 318, a boutique consulting firm with offices in Los Angeles, Portland and Minneapolis. At 318, Charles has worked with Network Architecture and Design for film, education, government, advertising and design clients. As a partner at 318 Charles manages a team of over 50 engineers and programmers for Open Source and Apple related technologies.

His first two books, Mac Tiger Server Little Black Book, and Web Admin Scripting Little Black Book are available through Paraglyph Press. Charles’ follow-up books, Mac OS X Security and Advanced Mac Networking, are currently in production with APress. Charles wrote the Mac OS X Security Fundamentals course for the SANS Institute and is currently working with clients across the country on Directory Services implementations.

Abstract

Directory Services implementations are one of the most difficult yet required aspects of computing to many educational institutions. During this talk we will discuss some of the techniques we have used to deploy Directory Services with educational institutions. This will include the successes with certain technologies and the packages used in those deployments. We will also cover some of the shortcomings of Open Source technologies with Directory Services and some of the projects to watch in this regard. We will touch on Student Information Systems and the role Directory Services is now playing with automating tasks related to account creation, deletion and augmentation in regards to Student Information Systems.
