Haiku

Haiku is an open-source desktop operating system with the goal of creating an innovative and seamless computing experience. Their first release will be an improved remake of BeOS R5, which was a commercial operating system created by Be Inc. After the company closed its doors a group of developers decided to continue the BeOS as an open source effort. This project was started in 2001 under the name OpenBeOS and later the community voted for "Haiku" as the official project name.

After our first release the Haiku group will concentrate on making Haiku competitive with MacOS X and Windows. They have plans for minor changes like getting rid of application installation (everything runs directly) and big changes like replacing the directory concept with a more flexible and natural query and tagging based scheme. If you have good ideas, they ask that you please join them!
