Hard-Hitting Stats for Understanding Roller Derby

It has become common practice to use statistics to better understand sports, whether that may be ranking players or predicting the outcome of a game. Over the past decade, roller derby, a predominantly female sport, has evolved into a strategic game that relies on jammers to score points. Despite its evolution, roller derby has yet to fully rely on statistics at the scale that other sports have to better understand the effectiveness of specific skaters. I will demonstrate how PostgreSQL can be used to rank the efficiency of skaters with only a minimal amount of data (i.e. a couple of games). I will first introduce some common strategies within the sport and then show how specific statistics can be used to rank a jammer on their efficiency of scoring points against another team.
