Beyond a Single Mesh - Discovery, Identity and Federation

Audience:

Service meshes have grown in popularity and maturity over the past few years, and we have an ever-increasing number of organizations adopting this technology. This growth has brought in a newer set of challenges where multiple meshes want to federate beyond their trusted organizational boundaries.

In this talk, we'd like to present the use-cases that call for service mesh federation. We'd then like to talk about challenges such as service discovery and identity in multi-mesh environments. We'll finally present solutions to these problems using open source projects like Hamlet, SPIFFE, etc.

The challenges described in this talk are common to all the service mesh projects (like Istio, Linkerd, Consul, etc.) of today. These challenges are non-trivial, and solutions like Hamlet and SPIFFE are a work of collaboration between several open source communities. Along with these challenges and solutions, we'd also like to touch upon some futuristic use-cases like policy federation.
