ZFS: New Features in Replication

Audience:

Designing a reliable, performant data replication system is difficult, but ZFS provides built-in tools to help. This talk gives an overview of the send/receive mechanisms in ZFS that allow simple incremental replication to remote systems, and describes two new features that improve the workflow even further:

  • The ability to resume a partially-complete replication after network outages or machine reboots.
  • Compression of the replication stream to speed up transfers, minus the CPU cost.

Discussion of these features will focus on use cases for application developers as well as the design choices that made them possible.
