The 3 keys to successful civic hacking

What do you get when you blend open data, open source, citizen programmers, and government challenges? Answer: Civic hacking. There is a secret recipe for successful civic hacking. As a Code for America brigade captain for more than four years, organizer of numerous civic tech events and hackathons, and author of a book about open source, open government, and open data, I have a tremendous amount of experience to share about civic hacking.

In this session, I will share more than four years of insights into leading events and volunteers to participate in civic tech projects in their local communities. Many of these projects utilize open data from city, county, state, and federal sources. Knowing how to find, use, and tell stories with open data is critical to civic hacking.

Session participants will:

  • Learn 3-proven ways to approach civic hacking

  • Hear examples of each approach

  • Understand the value of open data in civic tech
