Open Source Software in Education

The Linux Expo of Southern California is proud to announce their first Education conference, to be held Friday, February 8th, as a precursor to the 6th Annual So Cal Linux Expo.

Continuing our efforts to promote open source software, we invite you to share your success in employing Free and Open Source Software in the education field with the rest of the community at this conference. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • A general overview of what Free & Open Source software is, oriented towards
  • ucators who may not be familiar with it.
  • Benefits you discovered and hurdles you overcame.
  • How you are using Free & Open Source Software in educational environments.
  • What software is available.
  • Where you found information and support for your project

Widespread acceptance and participation by the user community has established SCALE as a premiere Open Source conference in the Southwest. 2008 marks the sixth year that SCALE has been engaging and inspiring the open source community. Our event is uniquely community-based and attracts a wide variety of sponsors, non-profit groups, user groups, and attendees.

Your proposal should be submitted in the form of a 1-page abstract consisting of:

  • Title of talk Name, affiliation, short biography, a passport size picture and contact email address of the presenter (needed for publishing on the website and event program schedule) .
  • A list or a brief description of the main points to be presented should be submitted. Please include enough detail to allow the committee to evaluate the proposal.

Please notify us if the presentation will require a special technical set-up. The standard setup provided will include:

  • Microphone
  • Overhead projector (resolution 1024x768)
  • A laptop running Linux with a PDF viewer and OpenOffice

Because we are attempting to increase awareness of open source software and open source document formats, it's desirable that presentations be done in an open, non-proprietary format. Submissions in ODF, text or PDF formats will be accepted.

Presentations will be allotted a time slot of about 45 minutes, but if your presentation needs more time, please indicate so. Send your proposal to tim@socallinuxexpo.org.
