Speaker Interview: Marek Vasut

Q: Could you please introduce yourself and tell us a little about your background?

A: Hi! I'm Marek Vasut and I work as a contractor for some years already, mostly for DENX S.E. GmbH in Germany. I do U-Boot/Linux/OpenEmbeeded work for living and I actively participate in those projects even outside of my work. I play around with FPGAs in my free time a lot, but it's nothing big and professional :) I'd love to talk about any of these things to whoever is interested, so please do come and talk to me anytime!

Q: You're giving a talk on Introduction to SoC+FPGA. Without tipping your hand on the actual talk, can you give us an idea of what we might expect?

A: First of all, I explain what is SoC, FPGA, their combination SoC+FPGA and how that's useful. Then I go through the available SoC+FPGA systems on the market, describe their properties, pros and cons, available software support and briefly give some pointers on how to get started with them. Finally, I focus on the SoC+FPGAs which run Linux, in particular how to use the FPGA part in mainline Linux using the latest developments in that area -- Device Tree Overlays and FPGA manager -- to get the best possible experience out of such systems.

Q: Is this your first visit to SCALE? If so, what are your expectations? If not, can you give us your impressions of the event?

A: This is my first visit to SCaLE (and the US), but I know some of the speakers. I expect excellent technical content and awesome hallway discussions :)

Q: Is any of this mainline Linux FPGA stuff deployed in production ?

A: Yes, it is, and it works.

Q: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

A: I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the event!
