Continuing our discussions with this year’s Women in Open Source speakers,  we sat down with recently appointed GNOME Foundation Executive Director Stormy Peters.  We had a chance to discuss some history of GNOME on alternative platforms as well as efforts to get FOSS computers into the hands of school children in Mexico.

-Gareth

Gareth: Hi Stormy, can you tell us a bit about your background?

Stormy: Although you wouldn’t necessarily know it now, I have a degree in computer science and started out my career writing code. If someone had told me about open source software in college, I would have started out my career working on open source. As it was, I had to wait a few years to stumble across it.

Interview with Extreme Networks

January 16th, 2009

SCALE is fortunate to be able to use network equipment loaned by Extreme Networks at the 7th annual So CaL Linux Expo.  Extreme Networks uses Open Source Software in their products, so we thought it would be interesting to interview them.  Glenn Weinberg, Vice President and General Manager of Extreme Networks was kind enough to answer our questions.

SCALE: How did Extreme Networks get started?

EN:  Extreme Networks was founded in 1996 in the Silicon Valley at a key inflection point for the Ethernet industry, the creation of Gigabit technology with Quality of Service to meet the growing connectivity challenges including corporate enterprises who were transitioning away from ATM and telecom service providers who were dealing with the fast emerging Internet and converged services. Extreme Networks launched its first product, the Summit fixed line of Gigabit switches in 1997, and became a worldwide player in just a few short years, going public on the stock market in 1999.   The company now boasts 190 patents, thousands of customers and a rich history of providing innovation and network performance.
