Most people who are using a commercial Personal Video Recorder today are unknowingly using an open source-powered appliance. Unfortunately many aspects of these devices remain closed. There have been many efforts to offer a completely free & open alternative to these devices. One such effort is the KnoppMyth/LinHes project. SCALE had the opportunity to chat with the project leader for this open source media center project, Cecil Watson.

SCALE is fortunate to be able to use network equipment loaned by Extreme Networks at the 7th annual So CaL Linux Expo. Extreme Networks uses Open Source Software in their products, so we thought it would be interesting to interview them. Glenn Weinberg, Vice President and General Manager of Extreme Networks was kind enough to answer our questions.
SCALE: How did Extreme Networks get started?
EN: Extreme Networks was founded in 1996 in the Silicon Valley at a key inflection point for the Ethernet industry, the creation of Gigabit technology with Quality of Service to meet the growing connectivity challenges including corporate enterprises who were transitioning away from ATM and telecom service providers who were dealing with the fast emerging Internet and converged services. Extreme Networks launched its first product, the Summit fixed line of Gigabit switches in 1997, and became a worldwide player in just a few short years, going public on the stock market in 1999. The company now boasts 190 patents, thousands of customers and a rich history of providing innovation and network performance.
The SCaLE team recently had an opportunity to speak with Jeremiah Gray of Intarcorp. Jeremiah and Intarcorp publish “Hackett and Bankwell“, a educational comic about Linux, open-source, and free software. Intarcorp is a Media Sponsor of SCaLE 7x.
SCALE 7x is rapidly approaching. And while the economy presents challenges, the upcoming Expo looks to be be very successful. The Expo floor is filling nicely - there are only a few dotORG booths left, and some commercial exhibitor booths. The speaker slots filled up promptly, and are available here. The session tracks will be published in the near future.
There are still some seats in the SCALE University training classes available. The class topics are Introduction to Virtualized Storage Management, Internal documentation for SysAdmins, Disaster Recovery: Will you survive?, and Saving the World with Fedora Directory Server. More information on the class content is available on the SCALE U web page.
There are still some hotel rooms available at the reduced rate, too. Information on them can be found here.
Important note: the end of Early Bird registration is approaching. It ends at 2359 PST, Jan 19th.
That’s one week from today!
